Summary of Job Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Senior Director, Head Business Development Europe, the Business Development Manager has the responsibility for all business development/sales activities in the targeted territory. The Manager will be responsible for preserving existing revenue and creating significant new revenue streams and on-going business opportunities to ensure that Cytel meets or exceeds bookings, revenue, profitability and customer satisfaction objectives in those accounts.
 
Responsibilities include:
 
  • Develop and deploy strategic account plans for all target accounts that delineate goals and growth strategies for each relationship.
 
  • Represent the product, services and support needs of the customer base and marketplace to the appropriate line organizations at headquarters, and work closely with marketing and product development to ensure tight alignment with product planning and the development of the product roadmap. This includes presenting opportunities for evaluation that could expand the company’s market and product reach.
 
  • Learn and understand Cytel products, services, pricing and markets. Keep current with internal Cytel plans and developments. Remain current on relevant industry and specialty topics as needed to perform other duties at the highest possible level.
 
  • Schedule Cytel personnel in support of business development activities as needed including any travel arrangements.
 
  • Provide administrative duties necessary to conduct job such as creating and maintaining up-to-date company files, electronic records including contacts, quotes and forecast records in Salesforce.com.
 
  • Identify target opportunities and customers. Provide market and customer feedback for product development & marketing.
 
  • Attend and support relevant industry conferences and events.
 
  • Provide weekly status reports and forecast updates using whatever computerized or paper-based system Cytel requires.
 
 
Qualifications and Experience:
  • BS degree in science, preferrably biological sciences or statistics.
  •  
PhD and MBA or equivalent experience preferred.
 
  • 5+ years sales experience with a track record of successfully selling high-value software and/or CRO services into the biopharmaceutical industry. Experience managing complex situations in global companies with strategic planning and execution.
 
  • Established connections in biopharmaceutical/medical device industries necessary, preferrably in clinical development.
 
  • Experience creating positive meeting opportunities at relevant levels in clinical development or equivalent groups.
 
  • Experience with start-up or small company desirable.
 
  • Strong problem solving skills coupled with the capacity to understand and articulate primary issues around key clinical technology. Ability to apply these skills to identify, analyze business opportunities in accounts and more broadly in the industry.
 
  • Experience working in a complex business environment with minimal infrastructure and support.
 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Exceptional people skills and understanding of organizational dynamics and politics.
 
  • Self-motivated and enterprising with the flexibility to work across functional boundaries as required. 
 
  • Strong team orientation and the ability to work well with others, including founders with a passion for research and teaching.
 
  • Fluency in the languages, cultures and business practices of the countries covered in the territories.
